A Message from the Pastor...

Welcome to the website of St. Paul Catholic Church in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. We hope you will explore the various features of the site and get to know what St. Paul's is all about. We are an unusual parish in that we include, first, a family of parishioners coming to worship at St. Paul's from the area around Harvard Square as well as from the city of Boston and from many suburbs and even from other states. In addition to our eucharistic celebrations, we offer programs in religious education, special lectures, an active youth group, opportunities for spiritual growth, and volunteer efforts to serve the poor, the hungry, and the suffering.

Music has always been integral to our life at St. Paul's, and the Boston Archdiocesan Choir School, the only Catholic boys' choir school in America, provides for the church's Choir of boys and men. This rare traditional Choir of boys and men sings great Catholic music in service to the liturgy at the 11:00 a.m. Mass each Sunday of the School term, while one of the boys' Choirs sings at the 12:10 p.m. Mass Tuesday through Friday, the Saturday 5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass, and Vespers at 5:15 p.m. each Wednesday. The volunteer parish adult Choir sings at the 9:30 Mass each Sunday, September through June.

The third component of St. Paul Parish is the Harvard Catholic Center, an active chaplaincy to undergraduates and graduate and professional students at Harvard University and other academic institutions in the area. A special Mass for students is held Sunday evenings at 5 p.m., and other liturgies are celebrated at the various Harvard graduate schools. Please see the links to Harvard Catholic websites.

I invite you to visit St. Paul's when you are in the Cambridge area (a map is available) and to become part of our community of believers. Our website includes a parish calendar that will let you know of the various events taking place at St. Paul Parish.

THE GREAT BIBLE ADVENTURE
What People Are Saying

I am impressed with the methodology and growth of The Great Adventure: A Journey Through the Bible. The canonical approach that The Great Adventure employs is a marvelous way to introduce the faithful to salvation history. When Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium are all brought together in study the result is a clearer picture of God's will, resulting in a road map for living. The Great Adventure, being faithful to Dei Verbum (the Second Vatican Council's Constitution on Divine Revelation), is bearing much fruit in the Church today and contributing to a stronger, more informed laity.
Francis Cardinal George,
 O.M.I.Archbishop of Chicago

I have seen real change in many of my parishioners. They have not only learned about the 'big picture' that contextualizes salvation history, but they've gained practical insights into walking with the Lord and learning to trust Him. If every parish did this program, we'd see a true revolution in the Church
Fr. Tomi Thomas,
St. Matthew Catholic Church, Norwalk, CT

The Bible Timeline series has changed my life. I never would have read the Bible if it wasn't for this, and now I simply adore Scripture. It's really inspired me on my faith journey. It has given me such insight into the Catholic faith and helps me to understand it's true beauty, and it excites me that I have so much of my life left to study!

About Jeff Cavins

In 1984 he began developing The Great Adventure when he realized that most people, despite their strong faith, did not grasp the big picture of the Bible. Though they knew selected stories, they were not able to connect them into a full narrative. His answer was to identify the books of the Bible that tell the story from beginning to end. By reading just these 14 narrative books, a chronological story emerges.

Over the past several years, Jeff has dedicated his life to developing The Great Adventure Bible Studies, a practical and color-coded interactive Bible study system. This system enables students to understand the chronological flow of Scripture, following salvation history. To date, more than 2,200 Great Adventure studies have been conducted helping hundreds of thousands of Catholics and other Christians learn Sacred Scripture in a practical way.

Jeff Cavins is recognized nationally and internationally as a dynamic Bible teacher who can take complex theological concepts and make them practical for everyone. After twelve years as a Protestant pastor, Jeff returned to the Catholic Church under the guidance of Bishop Paul Dudley.   A founding host of EWTN's Life on the Rock, he tells the story of his conversion in his best-selling book, My Life on the Rock: A Rebel Returns to the Catholic Faith.

Jeff received an MA in Theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville. He is currently the Director of the Archbishop Harry J. Flynn Catechetical Institute based in St. Paul, Minnesota where he resides with his wife and three daughters.

The Year of Faith begins on October 11, 2012 and will end on November 24, 2013, the Solemnity of Christ the King. The Pope has chosen October 11, 2012 as the opening date because on this day two important anniversaries occur: the 50th anniversary of the opening of The Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church

Part One. The Profession of Faith
Part Two.  The Celebration of the Christian Mystery
Part Three  Life in Christ
Part Four    Christian Prayer

Why the Year of Faith

Pope Benedict wrote: "The church is well aware of the problems facing the faith" and recognizes that without a revitalization of faith rooted in a personal encounter with Jesus, "then all other reforms will remain ineffective."

Parish Spirituality Survey. Last fall we conducted a survey focusing on spirituality in the Parish. The survey was completed by a large number of individuals in the Parish and the responses and comments reflect the strong desire to grow in the spiritual life of our Roman Catholic tradition. Parishioners Angela Jones and David Sand worked diligently for a number of months with Father Drea to compile and chart the results -- a monumental task, but one they engaged with tremendous generosity of time and talent. The results of the survey are now published in the format of six installments and available online by clicking on the links below. Printed copies are available in the vestibule of the church. Please be sure to read the results and pray about them as to how they can help our entire Parish community grow in relationship with our risen Lord Jesus. .
